We offer family-friendly Filipino Martial Arts lessons designed to build practical self-defense skills, confidence, and teamwork. Our classes provide a safe, supportive environment where students of all ages—girls and boys alike - can train together, grow together, and master the fundamentals of FMA.
We begin with weapons to build sharper reflexes and real-world self-defense skills. Since everyday objects can be used for protection, weapon awareness is essential, so proper training gear helps students stay safe and progress confidently.
In FMA, we start with weapons and as we become more advanced we learn more hand to hand techniques. This is backwards from almost every other martial art taught in the world. However, learning to deal with weapons first makes learning to deal with hands easier. In a real fight, there is always the opportunity to pick up and use a weapon such as a frying pan, a baseball cap, a hammer, a chair, a bottle or even sand off the ground. For this reason weapons will always be relevant.
Because we train with weapons, students are expected to have the appropriate training gear. Our club insists on the following for members (non-members who want to try it out can borrow from club members in the first few sessions):
Uniform – Gusseted crotch pants are extremely helpful to gain flexibility. Our club uses Centruy’s 8oz Black Uniforms. The top is a VNECK Brushed top. It can be found here. Non-members are asked to try to wear black if they can until a uniform can be ordered.
Belt – A colored belt helps to track your journey. Certain activities are restricted to people who have attained a given rank; mostly for safety reasons. A white belt is awarded when you become a member. More advanced belts are obtained through strict testing.
Arnis Sticks - A student will need 2 at their first lesson. Sticks tend to shatter, so the student will need to replace and repair them to keep them in good order. Shattered sticks can splinter and injure your partner.
Training knife – this knife will be used for flow drills and needs to be obtained when the class is covering Knife Sections A, B, or C.
Folding training knife – this knife needs to be purchased when the club covers Knife A.
The above gear should cover the student for the first year of training. Advanced students will be required to eventually purchase:
Staff – Ratan
Spada – A FMA sword; a wooden or training version.
Sparring gear and armor
Other equipment will be provided by the club via monthly dues.
A common question that new students have is ‘how to tie your belt’. Here is a great video on belt tying methods (in FMA, the belt is rotated to the right just above where the right pocket would be on regular pants):
