Avoiding danger is always the best self-defense, but when you’re forced to act, you need a system you can trust. FMA develops real-world, dependable skills - not shortcuts so you can handle threats with confidence and responsibility.

We do some kicking in class, but FMA is not a kicking art. It is important to understand how to defend against kicks, and basic kicks are a great way to learn how to gauge distances in the long range. Not only that, but kicks help round out a workout. They really help with balance! The basic kicks are:

  • Front Stretch Kick (workout only – sometimes called ‘toy solders’)

  • Front Snap Kick

  • Outside Inside Crescent Kick (axe kick)

  • Inside Outside Crescent Kick (axe kick)

  • Roundhouse Kick

  • Side Kick

  • Back Kick

  • Knee Strike

  • Jump Front Kick

Wheel Kicks, Tornado Kicks, Spinning Back Kick, Jump Roundhouse, ect. are considered advanced kicks. They are good for some body types and fighting styles, but not all. We never require these kicks in class. Mastery of the full arsenal of kicks requires years of study with a master.

Knee Strike:

A good knee strike can completely counter ‘ducking and dodging’ styles found in boxing. This style can be seen in the famous fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali

JUMP FRONT KICK:

Jump Front Kick is a bit more advanced, but it is a great way to close distance and confuse. If done correctly, opponents will read the knee of the opposite leg coming up as a kick, only to be hit by the other leg! Master your front kick before trying this!
